UK SCHOOL FINDS XIRRUS ONLY DEPENDABLE 802.11N OPTION

The Holy Trinity Church of England Secondary School Increases Network Reliability for Students by Upgrading to 802.11abg+n Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays

Xirrus, Inc., the Wi-Fi “Power-Play” that delivers the most wireless coverage, bandwidth, and throughput in the industry announced today the deployment of their high performance 802.11abg+n Wi-Fi Arrays across the Holy Trinity School campus in Crawley, West Sussex, United Kingdom. The Holy Trinity School, a certified math and science specialist college, chose to replace their traditional access point network with Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays in order to gain more bandwidth and reliability for their growing student population and eminent one-to-one initiative.

“From the time our school was established in 1969 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we have endeavored to provide each student with an exceptional education through implementation of advanced facilities and technologies,” said Justin Wheelhouse, Systems Manager at Holy Trinity. “We tasked Xirrus to cover our 25 acre campus with Wi-Fi connectivity to run hundreds of devices over the site as we implement our one-to-one initiative. Xirrus was able to cover all five buildings on campus with fewer devices and installation time while providing more coverage and bandwidth than any other offer we considered. While the solution was being deployed we saw instant benefits; before we had even completed the rollout we were already receiving comments from staff about the reach and reliability of the new network. One teacher gushed ‘The new wireless service is AMAZING!!!!!!’ while another said we ‘could not have made one teacher any happier.’”

Justin continued, “Xirrus provided us with a free site survey and a coverage guarantee which gave us the ability to know the total cost of our wireless deployment before making a decision. Combined with the reliability of the Arrays and after sales service, this allowed us to know exactly what we were getting for our money. In addition, the Array architecture and de-centralized connectivity creates a reliable wireless network that does not have to tunnel all the way back to the server room, effectively reducing network traffic and cable runs. Further exceeding our expectations, the Xirrus network offers the ability to upgrade or introduce new technologies such as VoWiFi at any time. This is an extremely important factor to consider in the continually changing educational field and we are very happy to know that we can rely on our new network through all of our future developments.”

“The administration and IT staff at Holy Trinity know how important it is to implement satisfactory Wi-Fi in their classrooms in order to properly integrate technology into the teaching process,” said Simon Hollister, Regional Manager at Xirrus. “By upgrading their network, they will be able to focus their time and energy on the educational environment without draining important resources on traditional worries such as the number of users that can be on the network at once or which areas on campus are covered.”

First Official Site Survey

So yesterday was my first official site survey that I partook in. Let me just tell you that I have a newfound appreciation for the Applications Engineers, Technologists, and Priniciple Technologists of Xirrus.

My day started off early where I had to wake up 6 in the morning and be on the road by 6:30 to avoid the horrendous LA traffic. I got to my destination around 8-8:30. I met up with my coworker and our day of site surveying began.

I normally don’t do site surveys, but this time was different. Most of our employees that do the usual site surveys were out of town on a major project. Applications Engineer Sam Keys was left by himself to lug around an Array, Tripod, carrying case, backpack, carrying backpack, and a notebook. Therefore I was asked to give him a helping hand carrying the Array and Tripod around. After carrying the Array and Tripod around for a few hours, with breaks in between, it felt like a pile of bricks resting on my shoulders and pushing me down.

In the span of 8 hours, we successfully surveyed about 5 buildings. Each building had multiple stories, so we had to survey every level of the building, sometimes even twice to check the bleed through.

The two representatives of the IT dept. were kind enough to walk us around during out site survey and unlock any doors for us. Sam literally surveyed every corner, every room, every level of each building we had to go into.

Being a part of the marketing dept. over at Xirrus, I’m never really exposed to this kind of work. I am glad that I was able to take part in yesterday’s site survey because I really do have a bigger appreciation for what AE’s and PT’s do for the company. Not only do they have to know a whole lot about Xirrus and Wi-Fi, they have to be fit and in good to great shape because this is labor intensive as well, if done alone.

You also have to deal with the strangers when they ask, “what is that? A flying saucer!?” Really, as if I have never heard of that one before. But we still acknowledge the question with an answer, and they random person is astound with what we are going to do, or they could just be acting like they’re interested in what we’re talking about.

Overall, it was definitely a great learning experience. I even took some technology lessons from Sam yesterday as he was site surveying.

Students Cut their Network Wires to Connect Wirelessly

Uffculme School Upgrades Network to Deliver High Performance Wi-Fi for their Students Using Xirrus 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays

Xirrus, Inc., the Wi-Fi “Power-Play” that delivers the most wireless coverage, bandwidth, and throughput in the industry announced today the deployment of their 802.11abg+n Wi-Fi Arrays across Uffculme School, located in Cullompton, United Kingdom. Uffculme School replaced their existing Access Point infrastructure with Xirrus 802.11abg+n Wi-Fi Arrays to gain better network performance for their wireless video streaming and 1:1 computer initiative. The transition to Xirrus was quick, seamless, and provided the school with the necessary bandwidth for Wi-Fi to be their primary network connection.

Uffculme School is a Foundation Comprehensive School for boys and girls aged 11-16. There are approximately 950 students and 140 staff members spread across nine buildings. The school aims to provide effective formal and informal learning through which all of its pupils will achieve their potential in as many ways as possible, develop spiritual and moral values, obtain a variety of skills and qualifications to prepare them for the next stage of life, and be part of a community within which all feel secure and valued.

“We have been a specialist school for Mathematics and Computing since 2005 and have just been designated as a High Performing Specialist School for Applied Learning,” said Lorraine Heath, headteacher of Uffculme School. “A central strand of the move to personalize the learning experience for all students is our goal to provide every student with a laptop computer with ready access to media resources and the internet.”

Matt Pearce, Network Manager at Uffculme School said, “We already had a Wi-Fi network supplying ample coverage, but we lacked the user density for four new class sets of 32 laptops each. We decided to invest in a system that could deliver the bandwidth and throughput for our future 1:1 initiative. With multiple computing platforms from Windows notebooks and netbooks to Blackberry and Windows Mobile PDAs streaming video over our own Streaming Media system and accessing our Uffculme School Portal (VLE) inc. Digital Media, it was critical we install the highest performing Wi-Fi network possible.” Matt continued, “We tried several Wi-Fi vendors before selecting Xirrus. We chose Xirrus because of the low number of access devices needed to cover our nine building campus and their ability to cope extremely well with high density areas.”

“The deployment of our 802.11n Arrays at Uffculme School provided the boost in bandwidth and user density that the school needed in order to support the increased stress on the network that results with video over Wi-Fi applications and when every student, teacher and faculty member is provided with a personal laptop,” said Simon Hollister, Regional Manager (UK) at Xirrus. “With a single cable drop, one of our Wi-Fi Arrays can cover multiple classrooms, support hundreds of concurrent users, and deliver the bandwidth necessary to implement a successful 1:1 student computer initiative – no other Wi-Fi company can come close to this accomplishment.”
